I recently read an article in the Marin Independent Journal that a small slice of land once owned by Janis Joplin will be purchased by the MarinCounty Open Space District to provide access to Blithedale Ridge from Baltimore Canyon in Larkspur.

The headline caught my eye because of the mention of Janis Joplin (as it was meant to do), but I was so pleased to learn that this bit of land will become part of the hiking area that I love to roam. I can go out my door in Mill Valley and soon be on a fire road that will take me to trails and paths leading to Mt. Tamalpais, Corte Madera, Larkspur and beyond.

I’ll think of Janis as I meander the trails and be thankful that I live in a place where they are preserved. Speaking of legends, you can learn more about the history and terrain of Mt. Tamalpais by checking out our story: Mt. Tamalpais’, Lands and Legends.

That is a neat article M’Gee. I also like getting out on Mt. Tam, but don’t do it often enough. A few years ago another dad and I took our sons’ cub scout den up on Mt. Tam to try to find the remains of a U.S. Navy seaplane that had crashed on the mountain in 1944. The seaplane was flying from the Alameda Naval Air Station, to the Kaneohe Naval Air Station, Oahu, Hawaii, when it crashed into Mount Tamalpais within 20 minutes of its take-off from San Francisco Bay killing the eight crew members. We did find the wreckage, or what’s left of it. I believe it is protected as a historic site, so if anyone reading this finds the site, please do not remove anything from there.

Sounds like heaven for people and dogs! Amazing
that a walk or hike in the great outdoors, is just
a few feet from our front doors. How about you, me &
the dogs take a long walk sometime?
