San Francisco's 49 Mile Drive Part 2

Over the years, I'd been on every street and to every place we mention in our 49 Mile Drive video. But seeing them all at once as part of a coherent and carefully planned road trip left me with a renewed appreciation for San Francisco's physical, cultural and historical diversity, its good and lively

spirit and its sheer physical beauty. If it were up to me, and if I had the time to spend that the route truly deserves, I'd take a 49 mile scenic walk. In our video, we dashed by places that ought to be savored slowly. Chinatown, North Beach, the Presidio and Lands End, Golden Gate Park, the Mission District, South Beach and much more. In the near future, we'll add more detailed videos and stories about these and many other San Francisco locations. But for now, this scenic drive is a great introduction for newcomers and a reintroduction for us old-timers to a city that ought to be as celebrated as it is.

Since we circumnavigated much of San Francisco, a major construction and environmental restoration project has begun at Lands End. It’s part of the Trails Forever program coordinated by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Trails and habitats will be restored and new parking facilities will be created. It will all lead to profound and positive changes at Lands End and throughout much of the entire Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In Golden Gate Park, Lindy in the Park offers free swing dancing every Sunday from 11AM to 2PM. Free beginners lesson start at 12:30. Also, in Golden Gate Park, the Angling Club continues and Art Dolosso has written a book, The Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club Anthology, which should be available in 2007. I’m very sorry to learn, however, that Wayne Taylor has passed away. He, Art and Steve Marks were delightful guys to be with and were kind, funny and patient instructors. And finally, the St. Francis Fountain has completed its kitchen and now serves more food than ever from a full menu. While San Francisco struggles to keep the ‘49ers in the city, I suggest that Mayor Gavin Newsom and owner Jon York take a page from the past and reach an agreement over a milk shake and soda down at the Fountain.

Thank you for the 49 mile video. I lived in San Francisco in 1969-70 while serving in the military at the Presidio. My daughter Jenny was born at the Letterman Hospital in 1970. My family and I have very vivid and fond memories of the Bay area. Thank you for the video tour. Bill C.

See where loved ones of many species are laid to rest in a national park, where kites fill the sky and where a professional football team was born.
